Barcelona’s 2026/27 season has started with plenty of excitement, and it is not only because Hansi Flick’s team has begun with two wins out of two.
There is a different feeling around this Barcelona side.
The arrival of Rodri, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi has given Flick more options and, more importantly, different options. Each player brings something that Barcelona did not have in exactly the same form before.
Rodri brings control and experience to midfield. Gordon brings pace, direct running and another attacking option from the wing. Adeyemi adds speed, movement and the ability to attack space behind defenders.
We have already seen glimpses of what the three players can offer.
Adeyemi scored on his competitive debut against Elche, while Gordon made an immediate impact with two assists in the same game. Rodri then made his Barcelona debut from the bench in the 2-0 win over Athletic Club.
The early signs are encouraging, but the bigger question is what these signings can mean for Barcelona over an entire season.
Rodri: The control Barcelona have been looking for
Rodri is arguably the most important of Barcelona’s new signings because of what he can add to the centre of the pitch.
For years, Barcelona have been associated with midfielders who want the ball, dictate the tempo and help the team control possession. Rodri fits naturally into that idea.
But he also brings something else: physical strength and defensive awareness.
At Manchester City, Rodri developed into one of the best holding midfielders in the world. He became comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, moving play forward with simple passes and positioning himself intelligently when his team lost possession.
That experience could be extremely valuable to Flick.
Rodri does not need to play spectacular football every few minutes to influence a match. His biggest contribution can sometimes be the way he makes the game easier for everyone around him.
Pedri can receive the ball higher up the pitch. Barcelona’s defenders can have more protection in front of them. The wingers can push forward knowing that there is a midfielder capable of covering the space behind them.
That is the kind of balance Barcelona want in the biggest games.

Barcelona already have exceptional technical players, but Gordon offers a slightly different profile.

But his contribution against Athletic Club may have been even more interesting from a team perspective.
Adeyemi provided the cross that led to Fermín López’s goal in Barcelona’s 2-0 victory. His delivery caused problems in the Athletic defence and eventually resulted in the second goal.
That is important because Adeyemi does not need to score every week to influence Barcelona’s attack.
His movement can create space for other players.
If defenders worry about Adeyemi running behind them, they may have to drop deeper. That can create more room for Pedri, Lamine Yamal and other Barcelona attackers to operate between the lines.
His speed can also become a major weapon when Barcelona win the ball and attack quickly.
That gives Flick another dimension.

Can Rodri stay fit and control the biggest matches?
Can Gordon consistently turn his pace and creativity into goals and assists?

Those are the questions that will define their first season at the club.
The early performances, however, suggest that Barcelona have not simply added three big names.
They have added three players with different qualities.
And that could be the most important part of the story.
The bigger picture for Barcelona

Gordon represents directness and energy.
