Pau Cubarsรญ, who was key in Barca’s qualification to the quarterfinal of the Champions League and won the man of the match award in the process, has revealed where he’s getting his inspiration.

The 17-year-old central defender was part of the La Masia youth academy that broke into the first team under Xavi Hernandez, and has since continued to impress in all competitions since making his first appearance.

The youngster’s calmness under pressure, ability to communicate clearly, and exceptionally high level of passing ability have drawn comparisons to some Barcelona greats.

Speaking to the media before leaving to join the Spanish national team for the international break, Cubarsi reveals his admiration for two of former Barcelona center-backs.

โ€œIโ€™ve always said that my idols are Puyol and Piquรฉ. Puyol was about security, ambition, and character, both on and off the pitch.”

โ€œHe was a role model. Piquรฉ is another. I watched him on TV when I was little and liked his style. I visualize the way he played,” he said.

Cubarsi, who also lined up alongside Ronald Araujo in the 0-3 league match against Atletico Madrid at the Civitas Metropolitan, added the Uruguayan defender as one of his favorites too.

โ€œWeโ€™re a tight unit, a great team. But especially Ronald, whoโ€™s helped me tactically and personally, and Joรฃo Cancelo, whoโ€™s one of the funniest guys in the team. Heโ€™s always happy and makes you feel comfortable,โ€ he added.

The defenderโ€™s wholesome performance has resulted in myriad speculations that some powerful European clubs could attract him away from his childhood club, but the La Masia wonderkid is clear about his career path.

โ€œIn ten years, I hope Iโ€™m still at my lifetime club, at Barรงa, being an important part of it and giving all I have in every training session and every game.

“I will keep working to make sure things keep going well while I keep enjoying every moment,” he concluded.

Pau Cubarsi has been named in Luis de la Fuente’s squad for friendlies against Colombia and Brazil over the weekend. The 17-year-old is not the only Barcelona player on the list. Lamine Yamal also makes the squad, while Pedri, Gavi, Alejandro Balde, and Ferran Torres all miss out due to injury.

Lorem Ipsum has been the industrys standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown prmontserrat took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.
