Pau Cubarsi in action against Kylian Mbappé during Spain's 2-0 FIFA World Cup semifinal victory over France.

Pau Cubarsi Had Mbappé in His Pocket as Spain Knock Out France to Reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final

Pau Cubarsi showed pure class at the heart of Spain’s 2-0 victory over France in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal at Dallas Stadium.

The Barcelona centre-back has produced exceptional performances throughout the tournament, starting every one of Spain’s matches and playing over 90 minutes each time without being substituted.

Pau Cubarsi is only 19 years old, which makes it even more unbelievable.

Like, how does Spain manager Luis de la Fuente trust someone this young to anchor a backline against world-class attackers?

Kylian Mbappé sprinting in behind.

Michael Olise drifting inside with his elite passing and dribbling.

Désiré Doué running directly at you with tricks and close control.

Bradley Barcola waiting to attack the space once you begin to tire.

Step up? Mbappé runs in behind.

Drop deep? Olise gets time to pick a pass.

Double-team Mbappé? Doué or Barcola suddenly finds themselves one-on-one.

Stay narrow? Barcola stretches the pitch with his pace.

Defenders often describe this kind of attack as mentally exhausting. Every decision has consequences, especially for a 19-year-old.

But hey, that wasn’t the case last night in Dallas.

Pau Cubarsi, alongside Aymeric Laporte, completely neutralised France’s attack to secure a 2-0 victory and another clean sheet for Spain.

He didn’t get here through luck.

He didn’t start perfectly either.

He learned through painful mistakes.

Just in case you don’t know, Pau Cubarsi has already played in some of club football’s biggest competitions, and like many young defenders, he has made costly mistakes on the biggest stages.

If you remember, there was his foul on Giuliano Simeone as the last defender during Barcelona’s 2026 UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Atlético Madrid.

Against Inter Milan in the 2025 UEFA Champions League, he mistimed a challenge on Lautaro Martínez inside the penalty area, conceding a penalty that proved costly in a high-scoring knockout tie.

Against Benfica in the Champions League, he was sent off after bringing down an attacker who was through on goal, leaving Barcelona with 10 men. Many fans saw it as an error born out of inexperience.

Those mistakes didn’t destroy him.

They built him.

Every error has helped shape Pau Cubarsi into a more disciplined and complete defender.

He has learned that against elite attackers, discipline is often more important than bravery, and he has continued to prove that throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For me, Pau Cubarsi is now an elite defender.

Elite defenders don’t think, “We’re finished.”

They think, “Stay organised, don’t dive in, and don’t allow attackers to isolate us one-on-one.”

Looking at Pau Cubarsi’s performance on FotMob, the numbers tell the same story.

He recorded seven defensive contributions, completed 29 of his 32 passes (91%), registered 44 touches, and made one pass into the final third.

He also completed 100% of his long balls and wasn’t dispossessed once throughout the match.

Defensively, he finished with:

  • 2 tackles
  • 1 last-man tackle
  • 1 block
  • 4 clearances
  • 2 headed clearances
  • 2 recoveries

He also won 100% of his aerial duels, finished with a 2/3 success rate in ground duels, committed zero fouls, and remained composed throughout the full 90 minutes.

For me, and for many football lovers, Pau Cubarsi is the Young Player of the Tournament.

Only Tiktok and Instagram reels football watchers would say otherwise.

Spain have conceded just one goal throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and now they are one game away from becoming world champions.
