Futbol Club Barcelona of Spain travel to Czech Republic on Wednesday, 23/10/2019 to face Czech football giants, Slavia Prague in the third round of games in the group F of the UEFA Champions League.
The match is billed to kick-off by 8pm Nigerian time at the Sinobo Stadium, the home of Slavia Prague with the return leg to be played on 05/11/2019 at the Camp Nou in Spain.
This article takes a look at the match preview, the possible lineup to be made by Barcelona coach, Ernesto Valverde and how the players will possibly fair in their respective positions.
Following the team’s great performance in the Spanish league away from home against Eibar over the weekend and winning 3 – 0, one would expect number one goalkeeper, Ter Stegen to start in goal having been impressive since the beginning of the season.
At right back, it is predicted that Portuguese defender, Nelson Semedo will start as Sergi Roberto sustained a knee injury over the weekend while playing against Eibar and did not make the trip to Czech Republic.
Defender, Gerard Pique is also expected to start in defense as he surprisingly missed out of the match over the weekend after coach, Valverde preferred a Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti combination. So, Pique is expected to be back in action this midweek along with French defender, Lenglet.
Unfortunately for Umtiti who just returned from long term injury, he also sustained a minor injury while training with the team and didn’t make the trip.
Jordi Alba is also expected to start the match on the left wing back ahead of new season arrival Junior Firpo, having returned from injury with an impressive performance over the weekend against Eibar.
From the start of season, Valverde has been opting for three men in midfield, majorly dominated by Sergio Busquet, Frank De Jong and Arthur Melo controlling the midfield. He only introduces Arturo Vidal and Ivan Rakitic in the later stages of the matches.
For tomorrow’s game, Sergio Busquet is expected to start in his favourite position, which is the defensive midfield, De Jong holding, controlling and linking the defense and attack with his delightful passes and a surprise inclusion of Arturo Vidal ahead of Arthur Melo for his versatility, tackles and never die spirit.
Many might be surprised over the predicted starting of Vidal over Arthur in the match but Vidal’s selection in the starting lineup might actually be worth it because his introduction in the last Champions League match at the Camp Nou saw Barcelona come back from 1 – 0 down to win the match by 2 -1 against Inter Milan.
For the front three, one expects Valverde to stick to Messi, Suarez and Griezzman.
Messi will be playing from the right flank and cutting in from the angles to supply the killer passes and assists to Suarez who will play as the top 9 and banging in the goals. Griezzman is predicted to play from the left wing and do the damages on the opponent and also creating through passes.
Dembele might eventually be subbed on later in the second half but he has lower chances of starting the match.
Having analyzed how the Barcelona starting 11 against Sparta Prague, let’s see what the formation will look like:
N. Semedo G. Pigue C. Lenglet J. Alba
A. Vidal F. De Jong
A. Griezzman L. Suarez L. Messi
