Argentine football superstar and FIFA world best player, Lionel Messi has finally broken the national team jinx having won his first senior team trophy for the Argentina after beating fellow South American team Brazil 1 – 0 in the SuperClassico De Las Americas trophy with the only goal coming from Messi himself.
The Barcelona wizard scored from a rebound after Brazilian keeper, Allison saved his penalty in the 11th minute, that was after Manchester City striker, Gabriel Jesus missed a penalty for Brazil.
The goal saw Messi score his 69th goal for Argentina and increasing his tally as the highest goal scorer in the history of the Argentine National team.
Recall that Messi has been trying to win an international trophy for many years after his team lost 1 – 0 at the World Cup final to Germany in 2014. Also in 2015 and 2017, Argentina lost the final of the Copa America to Chile on both occasions in the final.
Few months ago, in the 2019 Copa America competition, Argentina was eliminated from the competition in the semifinal by eventual winners, Brazil. With this trophy being won by Messi, the criticism will hopefully stop about him not winning any trophy for Argentina.
The SuperClassico trophy has been generating reactions from different corners across the world if the trophy should be regarded as an official and international trophy.
However, popular football site, Goal tweeted that Messi has just won his first trophy for the national team while another popular sports station, ESPN also tweeted something in same line.
The competition which was established in 2011 has been won on four occasions by Brazil but Messi’s Argentina won the trophy for the first time since inception.
With Messi lifting this trophy, it raises the question if it can be officially regarded that Messi has finally won an international trophy.
