Barcelona and Argentina football superstar, Lionel Messi is definitely ending the year 2019 as the most decorated player of the year as he just won the player of the year award in his home country,  Argentina for a record 12th time.

Lionel Messi becomes the first player in the history of the South American country to win the award for a record 12th time, the other player who comes close is country legend, Diego Maradona who won the award 4 times.

Recall that two weeks ago, the32 year old player also won the Ballon D’Or award for a record 6th time after beating Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil Van Dijk to the prestigious award. Messi was also the first player in football history to win the award for a record 4th and 5th time before being equaled by rival, Ronaldo.

In the same vein, Messi won the FIFA best player award for the 2018/2019 season, an award he won for the first time since its establishment.

Last week, Lionel Messi was presented with the Pichichi award, as the highest goal scorer for last season in La Liga with 36 goals. He also won the Di Stefano award, an award for the best player in the league.

Furthermore, Messi won the Golden Boot award for the highest goal scorer in Europe with 51 goals in all competitions, playing 50 matches and creating 22 assists. Messi is the first player to win the Boot for a record 6th time.

The diminutive player was also announced as the athlete of the Decade by William Hills and just yesterday, he was award the number 1 football player of 2019 by Guardian Newspaper UK.

For the National team, Messi has scored a record, 70 goals for Argentina in 138 games; he is the highest goal scorer in the history of Argentina. Messi made his senior national team debut in August 2005 and scored his first international senior goal against Croatia.

The Barcelona wizard has so far scored 6 international hat tricks and his most goals are against Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, with 5 goals each.

Messi has been to the World Cup final with Argentina, losing 0 – 1 to Germany in 2014. He has also played 3 Copa America finals, losing all of them.

The world of football continues to wait and see if Messi will win a trophy with Argentina or not before he hangs his golden boots.
