Argentina and Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi has been announced as the winner of the Balloon D’Or award for the 2018/2019 season ahead of Liverpool duo, Van Dijk and Sadio Mane and Juventus player, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Announcing Messi as the winner of the prestigious award means that the diminutive player becomes the first player in the history of football to win the award for a record six times. Recall that Messi was also the first player to win the award four and five times before former Real Madrid player, Cristiano Ronaldo equaled the records.

Messi who recently won the FIFA world best player award for his contributions to Barcelona last season which saw the team won the Spanish League won the Ballon D’Or by coming first, Liverpool defender, Van Dijk came second, Cristiano Ronaldo was third and Sadio Mane took the fourth position.

The female Ballon D’Or award went to World Cup winner and United States of America player, Rapinoe while the Yachine Award for the world best goalkeeper went to Allison Becker of Liverpool. The best under 21 player which was called the Kopa Trophy went to former Ajax defender, De Ligt.

Messi, yesterday night won the match for Barcelona against tough opponent, Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano with an 86th minute fantastic finish from outside the box after a sumptuous assist from Luis Suarez which ensured that Barcelona left with 3 points and on top of the Spanish League.

Recall that the last edition of the award was won by Real Madrid and Croatian play maker, Luka Modric, which brought to an end the 10 years consecutive reign of the Messi  / Ronaldo domination of the award.

Another fun of the night was when messi was presented with a customized chair with his name boldly written on it for him to sit down after he was announced winner of the award by former Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba who was the Master of the Ceremony.

Barcelona fans on social media, Twitter to be precise are trending the hashtag, Messix and M6ssi as a sign to celebrate Messi winning the award for a record six times.

As Messi continues to break and make all available football records in the Spainish league, Argentina, Europe and the world as a whole, is it not safe to say that Messi a.k.a GOAT is the greatest footballer of all time???
